Key Stage 1

Year 1 and Year 2

Our vibrant and engaging curriculum is designed so that the subject specific knowledge and skills are scaffolded within a cross-curricular theme or context. The themes last for a half term. We believe that children learn best through first hand experiences including practical activities, ‘Wow’ starters, local visits and trips, and we also invite visitors into school. This helps to create real experiences for the children and also gives them an understanding of how their skills could be used in real life jobs

Our curriculum is designed around the principle of greater learner involvement in their work. It requires deep thinking and encourages learners to work in a variety of different ways to gain deep understanding.

With this in mind when designing our curriculum at Coteford we decided to introduce a theme each half term across Key Stage 1 with each year group having a WOW starter to launch the new topic. We want the children to be curious and inquisitive learners, who wants to ask questions and find answers.  By doing this their knowledge and skills will deepen and become more embedded, therefore, ensuring our pupils know and remember more for their continued learning.

Continuity and progression in the curriculum are built around the National Curriculum Programmes of Study. These are broken into year group expectations and have additional challenges for able learners.
